The best down-to-earth approach to eating well
Our bodies follow rules, and one of those rules is what kind of eating food is good for us. Many people find it hard to stick to a diet that is good for them.
We can form long-lasting, healthy eating habits if we use the ideas that explain how habits are formed.
I do push-ups five times a week and have been doing so for well over a quarter of a century. My arms didn’t get as strong as they are now overnight.
I stopped doing push-ups for a few weeks or months, but then I went back to doing them every day. If I wanted to keep getting the results I’ve gotten so far, I had to make push-ups a regular part of my routine.
The same thing is true about eating in a healthy way. You will never get healthier if you only eat healthy food sometimes. If you want to have good nutritional health, you should make healthy eating a regular part of your life.
People are more likely to join the healthy eating “bandwagon” if they read books or visit websites about nutrition. Even though many of these books and websites talk about what foods should be part of a healthy diet, they don’t tell readers how to make eating healthy a regular part of their lives.
So, when people are faced with temptations, they quickly go back to their old unhealthy eating habits in a very short amount of time.
What does a habit mean? The dictionary says that a habit is a pattern of behaviour that is learned through repeated practice or physiologic exposure and shows up as regularity or getting easier to do.
Can you see that if we just stick to this idea of a healthy diet, we’d be well on our way to being in the best shape of our lives?
Bad habits with food:
It doesn’t happen overnight that you start eating badly. The majority of people started doing these things when they were still kids. So, one reason why it’s hard for many people to change their bad eating habits is that they’ve been doing them for a long time and have become a part of their daily lives.
What’s the point of eating?
There are two main reasons why people eat. The first one is to give our bodies the fuel they need. The second reason is to do something for one’s own pleasure. It’s a shame that some of the foods that make us happy also make us sick.
Most people decide what to eat based on what they see, what they smell, or what they taste. Think about these three sentences: That pie does look very tasty! The smell of that apple pie makes your mouth water. That pie tastes delicious.
Keep in mind that all three sentences have something to do with enjoying a meal. On the other hand, the pie, which makes you feel good, may or may not be good for your health from a nutritional point of view. Because of this, we can’t just choose what to eat based on what we see, smell, or taste. Instead, we need to use some judgment.
It is possible to enjoy eating healthily:
Some people think that eating healthy food is boring and doesn’t have much flavour. I think one reason they think this way is because most food ads show foods that are high in calories, fat, or sugar, while only a small amount of food ads show fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans. So, if there was more focus on nutrition education, more people would learn that eating healthy can be fun and tasty.
What a difference it has made in my life to eat well:
In 1998, my wife tried to get me to go to the local medical centre for a checkup. Even though I didn’t feel sick, she was very clear that I should get a checkup once a year. I’m glad I listened to her advice.
I’ve always been active and a sports fan. I run 18 miles over the course of a week. I didn’t expect to hear bad news from the doctor when I went to see him, so I was surprised by it. He told me I had borderline diabetes.
If diabetes isn’t taken care of, it could be a big health risk. In the United States, it is one of the main reasons why people die. Because of a problem with the pancreas, the body can’t make the insulin needed to keep blood sugar levels healthy.
But even though he didn’t think it was necessary to give me any medicine, he suggested that I start reading some books about how to eat well. That was the first step I took toward getting into good eating habits, which helped me get healthier in the long run. At the moment,
I am happy to say that I am in very good health. People tell me that I don’t look my age, that I keep a healthy weight, that I don’t take any medications, that my blood pressure is normal, that my blood sugar is normal, that my cholesterol is normal, that my immune system is strong, and so on. People tell me I don’t look my age because I feel great and sleep well. I stay at a good weight.
God has blessed me with such good health, and I am thankful to him for it. Despite this, I don’t think that my good health right now is just a matter of luck. I am sure that one of the main reasons I am healthy is that I am willing to take responsibility for my own well-being.
A big part of this duty is teaching them to eat in ways that are good for their health. Our bodies follow rules, and one of those rules is what kind of food is good for us. We will get sick no matter what if we don’t follow these rules and keep eating things that are bad for our health.
